There are essentially four groups of consumers that encompass your potential customers. Known, Targeted, Greenfield and Blue Sky consumers:

KNOWN - Existing Customers

You already know your existing customers.  These are the consumers that have done business with you before and have the potential to be a customer again. There is no magic here, just a starting point.

TARGETED - Identified Consumers

These are the consumers you are specifically going after with your various marketing campaign initiatives. You may have already have them identified them as a lead or prospect.  They are the consumers on your marketing lists or match your ideal customer profile... but they are not yet a customer.  There are tons of marketing tools available today to help you segment, target and reach out to this group.  If you spend enough money on advertising, you may eventually reach these consumers. And given enough time and motivation, these consumers may eventually convert to customers... but when and at what cost?

GREENFIELD - Aware Consumers

Think of this region as the group just outside of those consumers you are targeting.  A​ fertile group of future consumers that you have yet to be aware of.  They embody all the potential customers that you could have.  But, marketing to these consumers is nearly impossible, because they are unidentifiable to you and as such, they cannot be targeted.  ​They are your future potential customers, in that they may already know about you, ...but you really don't know anything about them.

BLUE SKY - Oblivious Consumers

These are your next customers.  The endless group of unknown consumers that are as oblivious to you, as you are to them.  You need a way to connect with them and make them aware... so that they can become your future potential customers.  How do you know who these next customers are?  This is the ultimate marketing goal... the impossible dream...  the Blue Sky.

KNOW - Your Next Customer

The key to knowing your next customer, is knowing how to traverse these groups of consumers.  Shifting from your Known to your Targeted, and understanding the difference of your Greenfield and Blue Sky consumer groups.

You already know how to identify your Known consumers, and there are many marketing tools to help you determine which Targeted consumers to go after.  But, what about those Greenfield consumers?  Do you have efficient ways to identify and target them?  How do you even identify them?  It's really too bad they couldn't just tell us when they start thinking about becoming a customer in the future...  It would be great if there was some sort of signal or actions they could take that would let us know of their intentions.  ...Maybe there is and we're just not listening.
